Finland, the land of a thousand lakes, is a country in Scandinavia in northern Europe. The bright summers and dark winters, the quiet yet smiling and helpful people etch unforgettable loving memories to cherish. The capital, Helsinki, kissed by the calm Baltic sea has a serene beauty the travelers' eyes could never avoid. We were lucky to spend one year of our lives in Otaniemi, a district of Espoo, near the border of Helsinki. It is the home of Aalto university, one of the most promising research destinations in Scandinavia.
A large part of Otaniemi is known as Teekkarikylä, or student village. On one side is the Laajalahti Nature Reserve, well known for bird watching. On the other side is the Otaranta sea shore. During summer (June - September), the archipelago boat starts from Otaniemi according to specified schedules (details below). It comes back to Otaniemi after stopping at various islands in the archipelago. Families, students, friends in groups and couples board the boat to get down at any island of their choice. Some islands have nice beaches and some are ideal for picnic. One might board any boat all through the day to return back from the archipelago.
We started after lunch but I would suggest you to start early and carry enough food. If it is sunny and warm, find a seat on the roof to enjoy the mild Baltic breeze.
As we cruised through the archipelago, we could see sailing boats everywhere. Families own private yachts and dinghies and they never stay indoors on a sunny day. The soothing green along the shores calmed our eyes and souls.

This day long pleasure trip is very cheap, costs around 5 € per head. It is ideal for family picnic, couples in search of romantic solitude and nature lovers. You are bound to fall in love with Finland! Enjoy!
Tip 2: If you want to cook later, you will find islands with covered cooking facilities and fire woods provided by the city.
